Title Research: The Borrowers

Image
I watched this opening sequence on the watch the titles website where the titles shown are thin and black. The titles show the cast, crew, music producers and directors. This film was based on a book, so one of the titles shares which novel it was based off of and who the author was. The font changed to thin and white, because of the background changing. This is because you need to find the write color font that is easy to read which compliments the background color as well. Images prioritized in this opening is a Christmas village, kids toys, and a little boy looking through the glass of where these toys are. The little boy looks to his side to see a happy family with Christmas presents. The end of the opening sequence shows an advent calendar with a snowman on top saying "December 8". These images carry a melancholy connotation, as well as a joyful one. The little ...

Title Research: Little Women

Image
I watched the opening sequence of "Little Women" on the art of the title website, showing a black and white beginning with a bold, blocky font. The beginning of the sequence mentions the producer, director, cast and crew as well as the title of the film. A description of who the person being mentioned is lays on top in an italic font, while the person is in a bold, capitalized lettering. All of the titles are in black and white, creating the serious and professional tone. Images prioritized in the opening sequence include a snowy background with a neighborhood and a big mountain. Another image shows a man putting a wreath on his front door, which you can infer means it is Christmas time. The next image shows an old building with a carriage riding across the snowy ground. The next image shows kids running with a Christmas tree attached to a sled. These images carry a positive and happy connotation regarding the time of the year, as well as the scenery. The image of the kid...

Title Research: The Palm Beach Story

Image
I watched this opening sequence on the art of the title website. In the beginning, the font used to show the production company is in a white cursive font. The titles then switch to the main characters that are starring in the original title, which is shown after in the same font. While the opening sequence is playing, the titles show who was involved in the making of the film like the producers, directors, music producer and song writer. They have joined all of these titles on to one screen, with the cursive title describing who each person is, and a classical font for the individuals' names. Because of how old the film is, and the type of fast-pace it is going, the titles are more classical, and plain. Images prioritized in the opening sequence are the characters involved, the setting where the film is taking place, and goes into detail on what is happening in the film. Some parts of the ongoing scene are stopped, to emphasi...

Title Research:Juno

Image
I watched this opening sequence on the watch the titles website. The opening sequence starts off with titles regarding the production and distribution companies that were involved in making the film. In this case, there was a cursive font showing  "Fox Searchlight Pictures presents". In a block font, another production company was shown: A Mandate Pictures/Mr. Mudd Production." The titles switch to who directed and wrote the film, and then the title of the movie all in bold block fonts. After the original title of the movie, the actors that played in the film are mentioned. The costume designer, music and song writer are shown as well with the same bold font. Overall, the titles included in the opening sequence were directed to mention the people who helped make and produce the film. Some images that were prioritized in the opening sequence were the main character, the neighborhood, and some objects that were related to things in the movie. Most of the time it shows t...

Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
This website shows only a movie's title sequence where you can watch and study. This website has different categories to choose from, featuring popular films people usually watch. Throughout looking through this website, I learned how important a title sequence is towards a movie. The title sequence sets the mood for what's about to happen, and make the audience interested. With a uninformative, boring title sequence, the audience can being to lose interest in the movie. What I also learned is that the titles need to flow smoothly with the transitions. Every title sequence I watched shows the titles moving throughout the different scenes, which gets the moving going. For example, if the title does not flow throughout the opening sequence, and just disappear and come back, it looks unprofessional and not smooth. This would also make it harder to further the scene.

Title Research: Art of The Title Website

Image
I am looking at the Art of The Title site to learn more about what the title of a film means, and which titles are appropriate as well as how to use them. Some things I saw on this site were the trop rated title sequences were, and why they were rated this way. It shows the actual opening sequence along with the titles used. The website shows many different movie title sequences that go along with the title and genre. As I have observed, the title sequence should go along with what the movie is about, along with the genre of the movie. For example, with a horror movie, you would choose a dark title sequence with a creepy font. As the title sequence goes on, the background keeps moving, so the title has to compliment the background with everything else. Usually in a film, they take snapshots or beginning scenes to put titles ahead, to give a sneak peak of what the movie is.

Genre Research: Boyhood

Image
The movie "Boyhood" follows the same characters for a time period of 12 years. The point of the film was to share how fast life can hit you. The movie follows the young boy throughout his life in a broken home. His mom goes through a series of phases that are wrong for her, creating a toxic life for the child. The movie goes through a fast pace of how the child grows up to an adults, and as soon as you know it are looking for colleges and moving out. Throughout the kid growing older, we get an insight on the living situation where the father is unstable, and the bills are barely getting paid. This creates an economic issue, as well as family problems. Drama elements throughout this movie is dialogue, lighting, and camera angles. The movie is full of dialogue between the boy and his acquaintances, friends and family members. As he experiences life, he shares many arguments with his mom that set the mood or plot of the scene. The lighting throughout the film share high-key an...

Genre research: The Hate U Give

Image
"The Hate U Give" shares the story of a young girl who lives in a poor, black neighborhood, but attends a mostly white preparatory school. One night she went to a party and found one of her childhood friends. The friend offers to take her home, but before that, they catch up some more. Throughout these scenes, a police officer pulls them over, and ends up shooting and killing the childhood friend because he was scared of an inanimate object. The film shines a light on police brutality and the many occasions people of color are villainized for doing nothing. Some elements this movie has that I like is the plot. The plot distinctly shares the issues society faces, while also making it interesting to watch by following the guidelines of the climax sequence. Another element I like about this genre is the steadicam camera movement. Since this genre is mostly serious, there is no need for excessive camera movements like a crane or handheld movement. The movie I chose shares a sim...

Genre Decision Blog

Image
The genre I have chosen for my opening sequence is Drama. Drama is a narrative fiction supposing to be more serious than humorous. In cases like this, drama would be used to share a message or bring awareness to something. After much research, I wanted to do a drama opening sequence because it matches the type of film I want to make, which would bring awareness to society's standards and bullying. The characters of this film are taken serious, and most likely talk about touchy subjects. There is a lot of arguing and crying throughout the film, and is targeted more towards a teen crowd. The settings of these films are taken place at school, houses, fairs, restaurants and any other public place where friends hang out. Drama films involve relationships, cliques, teens and parents. The songs tied in with this genre are faint and sad depending on the mood. A drama is divided into multiple parts: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Catastrophe. The exposition is the setti...

Genre Research: Horror

The Powerpoint project above is a presentation of research about the horror genre. I explain the common lighting in the genre which is low-key lighting to emphasize the tension and suspense in the movies, showing only the shadows. Common angles were also explained like low-angle shots to share the weakness of a character. Common movement described in the powerpoint was handheld usually used in running scenes. The mis-en-scene involved is mostly gore consisting of a lot of blood and special effects. Some elements used is creepy rooms, screams and crazy characters like zombies. Examples of horror films include Scream, Us, and Ma. Sounds used behind these films are suspenseful, that start from quiet and progress louder as the suspense builds. Horror films are consisting of jump scares, and try to keep you on your feet. Most people don't carry an interest for films like these because it can easily give someone a nightmare, or scare them too bad. Therefore, most horror films are rated...

My Pitch

Image
After planning for a while, I have came up with two pitches about my film. The first pitch was about how underage drinking can obstruct a teenager's health. This film would consist of an opening scene of an underage girl at a party having drinks she is not suppose to. The next scene would cut to her in the bathroom not feeling well, as the tension starts to build up more and more. I would be interested in this film because it spreads awareness for teens who may participate in underage drinking to inform them. Although this is a good awareness, I feel like it is too short of a pitch, where if it was dragged out, the audience would become bored. The other pitch had to deal with the pressure of today's standards and bullying. This film would start with a girl scrolling through pictures sharing her frustration on how she thinks people will react. Throughout the film, you can see how the female's mood evolved drastically because of the impact of other people'...

Starting the Final Task

Image
My name is Mackenzie Mcauley, and I am a junior attending Fort Lauderdale High School. I am 17 years old, and have a passion in music, film and fashion. I am in the Pre-Law Magnet program, although I take multiple AICE classes as well as AP classes. I have been working at Chick-Fil-A for over a year now, and plan to be promoted soon. Some hobbies I enjoy are traveling, playing sports, shopping and hanging out with friends. My plans for after high school are to attend a four-year college, and become a dentist. I find anything in the medical field fascinating because you get to fix people's problems. My top 2 colleges are UF and UCF. I want to go to UCF because I love the environment there. UF offers a dental program, which is convenient since I need to go to dental school. I am more of an introvert, meaning I am usually content and quiet around others. I like to do most things by myself, because I like to be in control of the plans for a task...
