Genre Research: Boyhood

The movie "Boyhood" follows the same characters for a time period of 12 years. The point of the film was to share how fast life can hit you. The movie follows the young boy throughout his life in a broken home. His mom goes through a series of phases that are wrong for her, creating a toxic life for the child. The movie goes through a fast pace of how the child grows up to an adults, and as soon as you know it are looking for colleges and moving out. Throughout the kid growing older, we get an insight on the living situation where the father is unstable, and the bills are barely getting paid. This creates an economic issue, as well as family problems. Drama elements throughout this movie is dialogue, lighting, and camera angles. The movie is full of dialogue between the boy and his acquaintances, friends and family members. As he experiences life, he shares many arguments with his mom that set the mood or plot of the scene. The lighting throughout the film share high-key and low-key lighting. You can really tell the mood when the lighting changes. As the boy goes through a dark period of his life, you see how the lighting changes to show casted shadows that may represent how the boy feels. As things start to lighten up, and he go to college the lighting becomes brighter. The camera angles used in this film is high angle and low angle. The high angles appear when the boy is at his best, like shown in the poster above. The boy is seen looking at the sky, emphasizing his innocence. The low-angles come in once the rough patch starts. Some elements I like in the film is the sequence. The sequence follows the boy step by step through his life with a variety of mood swings. Another element is the acting, which shows the true feelings and struggle. The acting within the boy connects to the audience because of how real it looks. There are hardly any elements that do not appeal to me throughout the film, except for the sounds. There should have been a better soundtrack or implemented more sounds throughout the movie to catch the audience's attention.
